Blood Red Corn Snakes are a selectively bred morph of the common Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttatus), known for their deep red coloration. Their care is the same as other Corn Snakes, but here’s a full guide:

1. Enclosure & Habitat

• Tank Size:

• Hatchlings: 10–20 gallons

• Juveniles: 20 gallons

• Adults: 30–40 gallons

• Substrate:

• Aspen shavings (best for burrowing)

• Coconut husk or cypress mulch (holds humidity better)

• Avoid pine and cedar (toxic)

• Hides: At least two (one on the warm side, one on the cool side)

• Climbing & Enrichment: Branches, cork bark, and artificial plants for stimulation

2. Temperature & Humidity

• Warm Side: 85–90°F (29–32°C)

• Cool Side: 70–75°F (21–24°C)

• Nighttime Temperature: No lower than 65°F (18°C)

• Humidity: 40–60% (increase slightly when shedding)

• Heating:

• Under-tank heating pad with a thermostat OR

• Ceramic heat emitter (CHE) for overhead heating

• Avoid heat rocks (burn risk)

3. Lighting

• UVB: Not necessary but can be beneficial (5–7% UVB)

• Day/Night Cycle: 12 hours light / 12 hours dark

4. Diet & Feeding

• Food:

• Hatchlings: Pinky mice (every 5–7 days)

• Juveniles: Fuzzy/hopper mice (every 7 days)

• Adults: Adult mice (every 10–14 days)

• Feeding Tips:

• Use frozen-thawed mice (safer than live)

• Avoid handling for 24–48 hours after feeding to prevent regurgitation

• Feed in the enclosure; moving to a separate container can stress them

5. Handling & Temperament

• Handling Frequency: 2–3 times per week (once settled in)

• Handling Tips:

• Support the body fully

• Avoid grabbing from above (mimics predators)

• Be gentle and avoid sudden movements

6. Shedding & Hydration

• Signs of Shedding: Dull scales, blue eyes, reduced appetite

• Shedding Help:

• Provide a humidity hide (damp sphagnum moss)

• Soak in lukewarm water if shed sticks

7. Health Issues

• Common Problems:

• Mites: Small black dots, excessive soaking

• Respiratory Infections: Open-mouth breathing, wheezing

• Scale Rot: Blisters, discolored belly scales

• Regurgitation: Stress, too large of a meal, handling after feeding

8. Lifespan & Growth

• Lifespan: 15–20 years in captivity

• Adult Size: 4–5 feet (sometimes larger)
