Caring for a red millipede (or any millipede species) is relatively simple and rewarding. Here’s a guide to ensure their health and well-being:

Housing

    1.    Enclosure:

    •    Use a terrarium or plastic container with a secure lid.

    •    Ensure adequate ventilation (small air holes or mesh screens).

    2.    Size:

    •    The enclosure should be at least 3 times the length of the millipede and wide enough for it to roam comfortably.

    3.    Substrate:

    •    Use a mix of coconut coir, peat moss, and decayed leaf litter.

    •    Substrate depth should be 2-3 inches or deeper, as millipedes like to burrow.

    4.    Temperature:

    •    Maintain a range of 23-26°C (73-79°F).

    •    Use a heat mat if necessary, but ensure it doesn’t overheat the enclosure.

    5.    Humidity:

    •    High humidity (75-85%) is essential.

    •    Mist the enclosure lightly daily but avoid waterlogging the substrate.

    6.    Hiding Places:

    •    Add cork bark, pieces of wood, or leaf litter for hiding and climbing.

Diet

    1.    Staple Foods:

    •    Feed decayed leaves, fruits (like apple, banana, or mango), and vegetables (like cucumber, carrot, or squash).

    2.    Supplements:

    •    Provide calcium by adding a cuttlebone, crushed eggshells, or reptile calcium powder.

    3.    Feeding Schedule:

    •    Offer fresh food every other day. Remove uneaten food to prevent mold.

Water

    •    Millipedes get moisture from their environment, but you can provide a shallow dish of water with small pebbles to prevent drowning.

Handling

    •    Handle gently and minimally to avoid stressing them.

    •    Wash your hands before and after handling, as millipedes can release defensive chemicals that may irritate skin.

Maintenance

    •    Spot clean regularly and replace the substrate every 4-6 months.

    •    Keep an eye out for mold or pests in the enclosure.

Health Concerns

    •    Ensure the millipede isn’t too dry (they may curl up tightly or become inactive if stressed).

    •    If you notice unusual behavior or appearance, evaluate humidity, temperature, and diet.

With proper care, red millipedes can live for 5-10 years in captivity.
